Another great day a Sea Palling
Flexifoil/Kiteboarding UK Ford Car SMax Photo ShootFlexifoil/Kiteboarding UK Ford Car SMax Photo Shoot
Its Midwinter -11 wind chill. And its been snowing as we drive to Sea Palling. We are planning to do a photoshoot with the latest prototype vehicle from Ford Car company. The car is called the SMAX.
Some of the Flexifoil products at the time had not been released for public knowledge so they didn't want us to show the pics until official release day. Same with the Ford Concept car apparently it is the only one in the world which is a full working model with an engine. At time of press. So we used some blanking in the original posting but later we updated to show the true, once the Ford Smax and Flexifoil latest products were released.

Sea Palling has a big swell rolling in.

Kiteboarding UK. Ford Car Photo Shoot. Fords latest concept car with Jason Furness using Flexifoil Fusion and Charlie Gumley kitebuggying with the new Flexifoil Rage kite.

Thursday 9th February was set as the day for it to happen it was originally going to be at Lowestoft then Hunstanton however certain requirements were not proving to be perfect (wind being one) so a last minute change was set and Sea Palling became the better option for the day. Jason wanted big wave action, he had been watching the forecast for a while and could see that with a solid Northerly swell and 36 mph winds blowing north for the 3 days it was big swell on the East coast. So apart from East Runton and the Outer banks at Lowestoft it don't get any better for clean swell. Looking at the pictures it really doesn't look that big, but when you imagine all reefs protect this one with the swell you can imagine the mess the other bays were in.

Sea Palling was pretty much maxing out. Normally Kiteboarding is restricted the to the Northerly bays within the reef set up but today because of the place being maxed out and because we need to make use of the slipway we used the first bay which is normally put aside for Jet skiing activities but Nick from Beach Rock Leisure the jet ski shop gave us kind permission for the day.
Now if you kitesurf here regularly you will know how big a Northerly swell has to be, to come in to this last most southerly bay as it is slightly protected by all the other bays. Which were just going mad crazy.
The wind in the south reef bay or no 1 bay which is the biggest bay was slightly cross off hence some great spray off the waves and keeping the water slightly flat with a smaller wind chop and cleanish waves.
On Wednesday I went up to SP to check out the conditions as it was blowing 30 mph that day the sun was out and it was a perfect day. So Thursday should be even better with stronger wind and more swell. Thursday morning 0830 well the forecast did say combination of rain/clouds/snow and 35 mph NW to N winds. Shoot. As I went to the truck there was snow on it and the roofs of the houses and the roads. Shoot!. As we drove up to SP it snowed it snow quite heavily the horizon was grey and it looked bad. I was expecting a call from the Photo hogs to say the Photo shoot was cancelled. But like I said to Richard Wise the creative director on many many occasions SP will be a clear sunny day when Norwich has had rain all day. So fingers crossed we drove on cursing every snowdrop and every cloud. Lots of “I don’t believe it, it can’t get any worse”.
Jason Furness was driving up from Brighton, the promotion company from Regents street, London the Ford car from Essex and Charlie from Flexifoil, Cambridge, the Flexifoil Fusion was with them. I had put the word out to some of our more active members that Jason was coming up to take on the big swell and about the photo shoot, but because of the fact that it was all supposed to be Top Secret, I didn’t go to crazy with emailing all our kuk members.  We all met up by the slipway and had a good introduction and downed a few coffees in the Café. Charlie was there first at the crack of dawn and later Jason arrived. A big enclosed truck had the Ford concept car hidden away inside it. Initially it was Charlie’s turn the photo hogs wanted kitebuggying and the car pictures.

Now the car isn’t allowed to leave the slipway or be parked on sand therefore Charlie had some tricky work to do. He was required to ride towards the car come in close turn sharp spray some sand with a deep gouge and all this up against a car a large sea wall over looked by lifeguard tower the Ariel mast and god knows what other hazards in 35 mph using a new Flexifoil 1.8 Rage. Woow! Did he have it stacked up against. But full credit to Charlie he done and he done it over and over and over, that photo hog worked him like a bitch.
The wind chill was –3, I forgot that and Charlie’s hands froze. And he was at it for 2 sessions that day one in the morning and again in the afternoon.

Back and forth getting these shots perfect. The media guys had brought their own male model. And the whole photo shoot was based around a story board of guy with Ford car drives from the city to the beach and hooks up with kiteboarding kitebuggying guys kind of story.

So the first part of the kitebuggying was done. The snow threatened but moved in just ahead of us. We getting fairly good brakes in the weather and the photo shoot was coming together nicely. Then it was rig some kites up, some more Flexifoil Fusion appeared. From the back of Jason’s van. So some beach section stuff, then into the water for Jason. By this time crowds have gathered. The photo hogs and everybody else were helping keep the pictures clear of people, we need the sand to free of footprints and all details like this were left to the media crew and our merry band. As with the weather conditions it couldn’t get any worse. We had dogs walkers, general public and oh! 3 coach loads of school kids turned up with teachers. Unreal, I have never seen 1 coach load of kids at this location let alone 3 coach loads and they all had to come down the slipway we were using and all shots were done around them . Well on the East Coast when it rains it bloody snows that’s for sure.
Jason chose the Flexifoil Fusion 9m as weapon of choice. Along with an Aran Hadlow Pro board. One of the boards in the van was Aran's actual Red Bull board, but Jason is not officially allowed to use the board as its logoed up for Aran .

The wind was howling 35 mph and bitterly cold, we thought it would be its being snowing most of the day. The swell was maxing out east coast the huge swell was crashing onto the man made reefs and the whole thing looked a bit daunting. A few local crew had taken time off to witness UK Wave Champion Jason Furness, do his stuff in actual fact more people turned up to see Jason than they did to see the Photo shoot. Jason on his special diet here, as you can see it's true athlete food combining!!!

Kerr was there he was rigged up and ready to go, very keen to demo the Flexifoil Fusion. Wrightster sneaked up although his phone didn’t stop ringing all the time he was there Must have been his wife thinking he is spending more money on kiting equipment. Vicki Heather KiteboardingUK.com sponsored female rider and boyfriend/manager Ed drove down from Hunstanton to take part, but the conditions were looking a little ‘Knarly for Vicki, those Hunstanton kiters don’t get too much wave action and generally struggle a little, mind you so do we in these conditions. Sophie, (I work around kiteboarding, Flexi timer also appeared and spent the day with the crew. Ben from the shop became the full time reality photo hog and go-for. For all the candid moments.

Jason’s time in the water now, AH Pro and Flexifoil Fusion 9m.

Starts in the left hand side of the bay safe here, straight over the waves first run, slalom riding locking him into those foot straps. As you look at the water it's flat because the reef keeps it flat in the corners, great playground there. J bashes his way out the back, the photo hogs put on the big big lenses and Charlie has to some how instruct J to be in different spots for different shots very tricky. J likes the big beacon posts as do we all and rides close to the posts and teases them a little with his kite. The Flexifoil Fusion is in Rasta colours and looks hot, the colour stand out against the grey skies the grey sea. Very striking colours bright material. For J today most of the waves are backhand for him, not his favourite tack, he takes along wave one from out back rides it in across half the bay and then gets pitched horizontal over the falls. Ouch! bit of a nailing, he doesn’t drop the kite and he body drags to his board and is out back again in seconds. A few more runs and then goes out the back beyond the reef and into the open north sea ooopps slips off his board and struggles to regain it. But he does, he is lucky sometimes the rips can grab you board and it's gone. The Fusion has a good upwind tack and upwind body dragging is the biz as well okay so the kite rockets upwind with our without board attached.
J does a few more runs comes into the beach and slashes the shallows and the foam on the way out a big wave breaks in front of him grabs him and smashes him back backwards. I lose him from my camcorder shot I zoom out he still isn’t in shot. That wave knocked him hard and took him all the way back to the beach. It hit him so hard I think it winded him. He asks for assistance from Charlie and he puts the kite into Charlie’s hand, to grab a few seconds of breather. I think he checks that all his bits are in their right place and then puts the kite high again and goes out for more. . We see big air and big long jumps, the Fusion does high jumps and the hang time is noticeable long. Most 9m’s let you down quickly. The Fusion has awesome hang time and is stable in the sky. J shakes his hands, a fair bit trying to get some warmth into them. Well he gets his fair share of solid faces and carves them top to bottom and is very fluid. The kite puts him in most of the places that he wants to be in and he soon works out all the safe spots and dangerous spots to be in, in the bay. When I review the footage there are some nasty big faces he has to contend with when you see 6 to 8 ft faces out there by the beacon posts you know it’s a big day.
Kerr picks up another Flexifoil Fusion in 9m and goes out sporting his new Ocean Rodeo dry suit and boy does he looks pretty in that. Steady! Don’t get any wrong ‘s ideas here. He is out about 10 minutes gets a few runs and then gets nailed big style. He recovers but is soon in. "That’s F£$%n heavy and F£$ that for a game of soldiers" are Kerr’s comments. But he went and he played. So good show.

Kerr looking very dashing in his Ocean Rodeo dry suit.
Wave Champion J is still out there and boosting big covering a good 3rd of the bay with some large airs.

He plays it safe from now on the energy reserves are falling and it's just to dangerous and to ‘Knarly to let your guard drop and start taking the conditions for granted. He gets more instructions from the photographer and finishes off the session. Charlie gives good support. And Jason is back on the beach. He’s stoked and he is buzzing. It’s always strange when you meet somebody on the beach who has just come in from a session. You are freezing and you feel like shite and they are buzzing, they don’t feel the cold and the adrenalin overrides everything bad and Jason is here, euphoric.
Lucky Guy. He had a great session, the kite performed perfectly, we saw it crash in and out of the water, the relaunch in water was perfect, no dramas with the kite. J did a great job, we got to see the Fusion used in anger. Ford got their photos. And everybody is happy the photo hogs are congratulating him on a good job. It’s obvious to everyone how hard Charlie and Jason are working. Did I say work. I meant how much fun they're having.

Still with boundless energy and enthusiasm everybody continues with the photo shoot. Now we have a photo shoot with the car, the male model/writer and J. Both are in wetsuits but only one has actually been in the water.

Later in the afternoon more pics are required it's all shoreline water stuff. And then a lot more kitebuggying with Charlie.

Another private candid moment that Ben managed to get, of that attention seeking male model Paul and eerr!!!! No Comment!.

The photo shoot was all about this guy Paul picking up his new Ford Car and driving. Sophie wasted no time here. She cant resist a man in a wetsuit. "I'm sure I will get my arse chewed for this comment".
About 17:00 it started to get poor light and the Photo shoot ends. We retire to the local café and then onto the pub. We have bite to eat and shoot some pool.

Local girl Sophie, watching the balls very closely. "That's another fury of french language being hurled at me."
We have a questions and answer session with Jason and Charlie. We may print some of this but most was more development talk or personal so it won’t get printed. All in all it’s was a great day for all those that took the time off work to come and have a look, all said they enjoyed themselves. About 20:00 we all decided that enough was enough and we made our way home. Jason returned to Brighton, Charlie to Cambridge. The KUK crew to Lowestoft.  Today the whole crew battled against the odds and everybody went home happy knowing that we could not have done more. The Ford guys bagged their footage, and we played with our kites. As I finish this article lets summarize with one line.
Another day in the office ;-)
